While you can find Flame Systems From China for Very Cheap either from china direct or from a USA on line dealer, these systems do not comply or conform to NFPA 160.2006 code. The fire marshals will not allow with out these units being made to complaint to USA Code. These can not be used in the USA because they are not Labeled and Listed. These systems have very little safety protocol and do not follow USA code. These systems are made to Chinese code. These systems have not been indpendently tested

NFPA 160

Flame Effect Classification - NFPA 160 Group 3

  1. Clearance of Flame from performer and to a proximity audience; Clearance -10 feet from any performer and 20 feet + from audience.
  2. An audience should be located so that the incident thermal radiation received does not exceed that calculated by the following equation:
    When applying the preceding equation to an effect with a duration of 4 seconds or less, the time used in calculating the maximum acceptable level of incident thermal flux should correspond to the root mean square (RMS) value of the peak incident thermal flux.
    The incident radiation should not cause the surface temperature of the exposed skin of a member of the audience to exceed 111°F (44°C). Incident radiation can be measured with a radiometer. Skin temperature can be measured with an infrared surface thermometer or other equivalent means.


  3. Propane fuels - use approved hoses and E - Valves. A labeled and listed, fast-closing valve that automatically and completely shuts off the fuel supply in response to a normal or safety shutdown. Every controller provides feedback as to the status of the flame unit (flame sensing,shutoff on ignition failure). Redundant PLC's (programmable logic controller) and double shut off values to the either 5-11-20-40 pound feeder tanks.

  4. Propane Cylinders size 5 - 11 - 20 -pound bottles will be 10 feet away from flame source or the flame head separated by a metal layer with flame on top and tank under the flame within the structure (see photo below). Cylinders stored in buildings in accordance with Section NFPA 58 8.3 shall not be located near exits, stairways, or in areas normally used, or intended to be use, for the safe egress of people. We will not interfere with the safe and efficient means of leaving the building or facility under emergency circumstances. We will be 10 feet from any exits, stairways and doors.
  5. New: NFPA 58 8.3.1(a) 2008 If more than one such cylinder is located in the same room, the cylinders shall be separated by at least 20 ft (6.1 m). 20 feet from doorways, Cylinder not located near exit, stairways or near safe egress of occupants.

    (a) The flame effect shall comply with NFPA 160, Standard for Flame Effects Before an Audience.

    (b) The maximum water capacity of individual cylinders shall be 50 lb (23 kg) {nominal 20 lb. (9.1 kg) LP-Gas capacity}.

    (c) If more than one such cylinder is located in the same room, the cylinders shall be separated by at least 20 ft (6.1 m).

  6. Heads have a pilot confirmation and a safety control with two shut off values. Flames units shall be design to prevent accidental firing and emergency (E-Stop) stop Safety Shutoff Valve .All hose connections will have a shut off. A listed, fast-closing valve that automatically and completely shuts off the fuel supply in response to a normal or safety shutdown. Which is a mandatory requirement.

  7. Propane Flame heads should have a safety system like a Honeywell intermittent pilot module, providing system status and feedback with its sensors. Primary Safety Control. A control with a sensor that is directly responsive to the ignition device attributes necessary for the safe operation of the effect. In the event of ignition failure or loss of flame, the control causes a safety shutdown.
    "During the arming sequence, the Honeywell creates a high voltage spark on the pilot assembly. The pilot valve is energized and a solid pilot flame should be established. The rectification sensor will be detect the pilot flame and report back to the Honeywell that a solid pilot has been established. Upon detection of a solid pilot flame, the main flame firing circuit is armed. Only then can flame fuel be issued."

  8. The incident radiation should not cause the surface temperature of the exposed skin of a member of the audience to exceed 44°C (111°F). Incident radiation can be measured with a radiometer with a 4 second flame burst or less. Skin temperature can be measured with an infrared surface thermometer or other equivalent means. Incident thermal fluxes and resulting surface temperatures on the glazing surfaces is one tool to determine the table of distance.

  9. Temperatures of combustible materials subject to the heat of the flame effect shall not exceed 117°F (47.2°C) above the ambient temperature after equilibrium temperatures are attained. The temperatures shall be observed until a maximum or stable reading has been attained. The incident radiation is another tool to determine the table of distance.

  10. Location and Accessibility of Control Systems. Control system components and protective devices, including sensors, valves, and switches, shall be located so that they are protected against physical damage and tampering. Control system components shall be located so that they can be serviced and maintained.

  11. System should be approved and certified by ARL ( Applied Research Laboratory), NRTL, UL, North American TUV Mark Standards, State Mechanic Certified to comply with NFPA 160.2001 Codes.
    Listed.* Equipment, materials, or services included in a list published by an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with evaluation of products or services, that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials or periodic evaluation of services, and whose listing states that either the equipment, material, or service meets identified standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose.
    Labeled * Equipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol, or other identifying mark of an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and concerned with product evaluation, that maintains periodic inspection of production of labeled equipment or materials, and by whose labeling the manufacturer indicates compliance with appropriate standards or performance in a specified manner.


  12. Rehearse the Flame Effect before the show" "This will let you know, in a safe environment, how the product will perform in the venue, and if there are any additional changes that need to be made to account for the flame effects." If you are using talent, be sure to include them in the Propane Flame rehearsal. "This will allow the artist to be familiar with the effect and to maintain a comfortable distance from the devices while performing.

 

How The Olympic Torino Torch Works
The 2006 Olympic Relay torch is 30.31 inches (770 mm) long. It has an aluminum alloy shell, and its burner and fuel pipe are made from a brass and copper alloy. The Toronto torch burns 40% polypropylene/60% butane fuel from a pressurized canister. The torches included a burner system that utilized a double flame, helping it to stay lit even in erratic winds. The external flame burns slowly and at a lower temperature than the internal flame. This flame is big and bright orange, so it can be seen clearly; but it is unstable in winds. The interior flame burns hotter, producing a blue flame that is small but very stable, because its internal location protects it from the wind. It acts like a pilot light, able to relight the external flame should it go out.
